Factor fo Tracheostomy after Cardiac Surgery: Timing of Tracheostomy as a Risk r Mortality
نویسندگان
چکیده
Objectives: The optimal timing for tracheostomy after cardiac surgery in patients undergoing prolonged ventilation is controversial. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of tracheostomy timing on shortand long-term mortality of these patients. Design: Retrospective study of prospectively collected data. Setting: Cardiac surgical intensive care unit (ICU) in a tertiary-care, university-affiliated hospital. Participants: All patients undergoing tracheostomy after cardiac surgery between September 2004 and March 2013 were included. Interventions: The authors compared the outcome in 2 groups of patients according to the timing of tracheostomy: Group I, early-intermediate tracheostomy (0-14 days) and Group II, late tracheostomy (Z15 days).

Early tracheostomy is associated with improved outcomes in patients who require prolonged mechanical ventilation after cardiac surgery.
BACKGROUND The best time to perform a tracheostomy in cardiac surgery patients who require prolonged postoperative mechanical ventilation remains unknown. The primary aim of this investigation was to determine if tracheostomy performed before postoperative day 10 improves patient outcomes. STUDY DESIGN We conducted a retrospective review of prospectively collected patient information obtained...
متن کاملPrior cardiac surgery is independently associated with decreased survival following infant tracheostomy.
INTRODUCTION Previous reports have demonstrated that prior cardiac surgery is independently associated with in-hospital mortality after infant tracheostomy. We aimed to determine whether these infants would continue to be at increased risk for death following hospital discharge. METHODS A retrospective review was performed on subjects < 2 y of age who recovered from tracheostomy in the pediat...
متن کاملIs post-sternotomy percutaneous dilatational tracheostomy a predictor for sternal wound infections?
OBJECTIVE Early post-sternotomy tracheostomy is not infrequently considered in this era of percutaneous tracheostomy. There is, however, some controversy about its association with sternal wound infections. METHODS Consecutive patients who had percutaneous tracheostomy following median sternotomy for cardiac operation at our institution from March 1998 through January 2007 were studied, and c...
متن کاملAnalysis of morbidity, mortality, and risk factors of tracheostomy-related complications in patients with oral and maxillofacial cancer
BACKGROUND This study aimed to analyze and describe the morbidity and mortality associated with tracheostomy in patients with oral cancer and to identify the risk factors associated with tracheostomy complications. METHODS We performed a retrospective chart review of patients who underwent tracheostomy during a major oral cancer resection between March 2001 and January 2016 at the National Ca...
متن کاملTiming of tracheostomy as a determinant of weaning success in critically ill patients: a retrospective study
INTRODUCTION Tracheostomy is frequently performed in critically ill patients for prolonged intubation. However, the optimal timing of tracheostomy, and its impact on weaning from mechanical ventilation and outcomes in critically ill patients who require mechanical ventilation remain controversial. METHODS The medical records of patients who underwent tracheostomy in the medical intensive care...
